The Pope Villa Floor Plans

Plan of the Basement Story

Latrobe’s design for the Pope Villa is unique in several ways. He despised a typical central passage, or a hall that runs down the center of the house, referring to it as a “sewer” where the waste of the household is paraded for all to see. To avoid this he used a servant's stair in its own private stairwell. He also did not approve of rear service ells, and therefore incorporated all of his service spaces within the main block of the house.

Plan of the Principal Story

Latrobe’s avant-garde design incorporates an elegant rotunda on the second story. The front two rooms feature curved walls and large windows. Greek columns and niches that once held statues were precursors to the Greek Revival Movement in America. These rooms guide guests through a picturesque route with interesting spaces and light patterns that are unique to Latrobe.
